Healthy Homemade Hot Chips (Oven Baked)

If your kids love hot chips but you’re not keen on the deep fried, vegetable oil type, you’re going to love this simple, healthier homemade version.

This recipe was inspired by two gorgeous Australian picture books — The Great Chip Chase and The Trash Palace by local artist Temma Lee and author Nate Mico. The stories follow the adventures of Theo, a toddler who is obsessed with hot chips. When he says the magic words “chip chip hooray!” — hot chips appear. Naturally, my kids were obsessed.

So instead of waiting for magic to strike, we made our own healthy hot chips at home — crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect for enjoying during storytime.

Healthy Homemade Hot Chips (Oven Baked)

Gluten free, dairy free, egg free, nut free

Serves 2-4 as a side

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes

  • 2 teaspoons tapioca flour (or corn flour)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 sprig rosemary, leaves removed and finely chopped

  • Generous sprinkle of sea salt

    Instructions:

  1. Wash the potatoes thoroughly and cut them into chip shapes. Try to keep them a similar size so they cook evenly.

  2. Place the potatoes into a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

  3. Drain the potatoes and allow them to cool for a few minutes. This helps remove excess moisture and makes them crispier when baked.

  4. Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a large baking tray with baking paper.

  5. Transfer the potatoes to a large bowl and toss with the tapioca flour until evenly coated.

  6. Add the olive oil, chopped rosemary and sea salt, then toss again until all the chips are well coated.

  7. Arrange the chips in a single layer on the prepared tray, making sure they’re evenly spaced and not overlapping.

  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy on the outside while remaining soft on the inside.

  9. Allow to cool slightly, then serve and enjoy.

    Notes:

    • Swap rosemary for paprika, garlic powder, mixed herbs or seasonings of choice.

    • For extra crispiness, peel your potatoes first and make sure the chips are completely dry before tossing with oil.
