Make Versus Buy: Granola
Welcome to the next post in my Make versus Buy series, where I break down the cost difference between homemade and store-bought versions of your favourite pantry staples - plus share a recipe so you can DIY 👌🏼
Today, we’re talking granola—a staple in our household.
For this comparison, I looked at Farmer Jo’s Gluten Free Salted Maple and Cashew granola. It’s one of the tastiest additive-free options you can find at the supermarket. A 300g box will set you back $10, which works out to $3.33 per 100g.
Making your own? It’ll cost around $10.60 to make a bigger 500g batch—just $2.12 per 100g.
Not a huge price difference at first glance, but here’s something to consider:
I calculated the cost based on Woolworths full-priced items. If you can grab ingredients on sale or buy in bulk, the price can drop significantly - making homemade even more cost-effective.
That said, it’s also worth keeping an eye on supermarket specials. If your favourite brand is on sale, it might work out to be just as affordable as making it yourself. Always check the per 100g price to compare properly. Definitely something to keep in mind!
