Make Versus Buy: Ghee

Welcome to the next post in my Make versus Buy series, where I break down the cost difference between homemade and store-bought versions of your favourite items - plus share a simple recipe so you can DIY at home.

Today, we’re looking at ghee - one of my absolute favourite cooking staples.

To give you a clearer picture, I compared two store-bought options: an organic and a non-organic version, and crunched the numbers on how much it costs to make your own.

Non-Organic Ghee

You can grab the Coco Earth non-organic ghee at Woolworths for $11.20 per 500g jar, which works out to $2.24 per 100g.

Making it yourself using Westgold butter comes to $9.65 for 500g, or $1.93 per 100g.
Not a huge difference, but the savings can add up—especially if you buy the butter on special.

Organic Ghee

This is where you’ll really notice the savings.

A 1kg tub of Sol Ghee organic ghee costs $43 ($4.30 per 100g), while making your own using Woolworths organic butter costs just $25.80 for the same amount ($2.58 per 100g).

That’s a significant saving—and well worth the time and effort if you regularly use organic products in your kitchen.
